During this hands-on institute, participants will develop their own Reading Like a Historian lessons. Each session will feature time for participants to work on their own lesson and receive feedback from other participants. In between sessions, participants will work on a different aspect of their lessons, and office hours will be available with SHEG staff. Session 1 will focus on drafting central historical questions and document sets; session 2 will focus on scaffolding documents; and session 3 will focus on designing guiding questions and graphic organizers.
Each session will include opportunities to engage with Stanford History Education Group materials as part of a large group and in small breakout groups to better understand various design principles of the Reading Like a Historian curriculum.
Participants will receive a digital record of completion. Participants who complete the course and assigned homework will be eligible for 2 CEUs, issued by the Stanford Center for Professional Development.
Please note: This institute is designed for educators who have experience with the Reading Like a Historian curriculum or who have attended previous Stanford History Education Group professional development.

Joel Breakstone

Joel Breakstone is the director of the Stanford History Education Group. He leads SHEG’s efforts to improve education by conducting research, working with school districts, and providing free curriculum materials. He previously taught high school history.
Brad Fogo

Brad Fogo is an assistant professor of teacher education at San Francisco State University. He was previously the director of curriculum and professional development for SHEG. Before Stanford, he taught history in public schools for nine years.
Teresa Ortega

Teresa Ortega is the associate director of the Stanford History Education Group. Since 2012, she has worked on SHEG’s curricula, research projects, and operations.
