This institute will introduce participants to the Stanford History Education Group’s Civic Online Reasoning curriculum. Participants will learn strategies to help their students become more discerning consumers of information they encounter online. This three-session institute will address the following topics:
- Research behind the Civic Online Reasoning curriculum
- Overview of Civic Online Reasoning curriculum design principles
- Modeling strategies of professional fact checkers
- Integrating online sources about current events into the curriculum
- Assessing students’ ability to evaluate digital content
Each session will include opportunities to engage with Civic Online Reasoning materials as part of a large group and in small breakout groups. Participants will learn strategies for implementing these resources in their classrooms.
Participants will receive a digital record of completion. Participants who complete the course and assigned homework will be eligible for 1 CEU, issued by the Stanford Center for Professional Development.
A limited number of scholarships are available for teachers who can verify current employment at a Title I school in the United States. Learn more about scholarships from this form and apply by March 29th.

Joel Breakstone is the director of the Stanford History Education Group. He leads SHEG’s efforts to improve education by conducting research, working with school districts, and providing free curriculum materials. He previously taught high school history.

Teresa Ortega is the associate director of the Stanford History Education Group. Since 2015, she has worked on SHEG’s Civic Online Reasoning curricula and research projects.
