This institute will introduce participants to the Stanford History Education Group’s Civic Online Reasoning curriculum. Participants will learn strategies to help their students become more discerning consumers of information they encounter online. This three-session institute will address the following topics:
- Research behind the Civic Online Reasoning curriculum
- Overview of Civic Online Reasoning curriculum design principles
- Modeling strategies of professional fact checkers
- Developing lessons that incorporate online sources about current events
- Assessing students’ ability to evaluate digital content
Each session will include opportunities to engage with Civic Online Reasoning materials as part of a large group and in small breakout groups. Participants will learn strategies for implementing these resources in their classrooms.
Participants who attend each day of the course and complete the assigned homework will be eligible for a digital record of completion and 1 CEU, issued by the Stanford Center for Professional Development.

Joel Breakstone
Institute Instructor
Joel Breakstone is the director of the Stanford History Education Group. He leads SHEG’s efforts to improve education by conducting research, working with school districts, and providing free curriculum materials. He previously taught high school history.
Teresa Ortega
Teresa Ortega is the assistant director of the Stanford History Education Group. Since 2012, she has worked on SHEG’s curricula, research projects, and operations.
