In the wake of the Revolution of 1917, Russia was embroiled in bloody civil war between the newly established Bolshevik government and various anti-Bolshevik forces. In this lesson, students examine scenes from Russia during the civil war painted by Ivan Vladimirov, an influential artist who lived through the event. Students reason about what life was like in Russia during its civil war and what art can tell us about the past.
