This assessment gauges whether students can identify the historical event depicted in an iconic photograph and evaluate its historical significance. Successful students will draw on their knowledge of the past to identify Malcolm Browne’s iconic 1963 photograph of Thích Quảng Đức’s self-immolation in protest of the Diệm government’s persecution of Buddhists in South Vietnam and then explain how the photograph was historically significant.
