This assessment gauges whether students can identify the historical event depicted in an iconic photograph and evaluate its historical significance. Successful students will draw on their knowledge of the past to identify the 1976 photograph of Mbuyisa Makhubo carrying the lifeless body of 12-year-old Hector Pieterson, who was one of hundreds of students murdered by police in the Soweto Uprising and then explain how the event was historically significant.
